The Rotary Club of Redlands was delighted to welcome Nathan Gonzales, who shared a nostalgic short film titled “Camera Car, USA” — a cinematic journey through Redlands in 1958.
Nathan, known for his deep knowledge of local history, treated members to a rare glimpse into our city’s past, where familiar streets, landmarks, and community life were captured in stunning vintage detail.
A Drive Through Redlands History
The short film took us on a drive through some of Redlands’ most beloved landmarks, including the Redlands Bowl, Smiley Library, Redlands High School, and the University of Redlands campus.
Along the way, we were “graced” by Ms. Mullen’s appearance — complete with her unforgettable pink hat — and enjoyed scenes of Redlands’ “moderately priced section” on Mariposa Drive, where mid-century homes and quiet streets reflected the charm of the era.
A Celebration of Community and Culture
As the film rolled, members reflected on how much Redlands has grown while still preserving the spirit of community that has defined it for generations. From literary traditions at Smiley Library to the “fine young people” of Redlands High School, the video beautifully captured the pride and promise that continue to shape our city today.
And yes — we couldn’t help but chuckle at the moment the Camera Car drove across the University of Redlands quad lawn. (We can only imagine what the groundskeeping crew thought that day!)
Thank You, Nathan!
The Rotary Club of Redlands extends heartfelt thanks to Nathan Gonzales for sharing this wonderful look back at our city’s past. His presentation reminded us how history connects generations and inspires continued appreciation for our community’s story.
