Spoke Newsletter – February 8th, 2024

TODAY

We will have TOMÁS D. MORALES, the president of California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB). President MORALES will provide an overview of all that is happening at CSUSB as the university continues to serve the people of the IE by transforming lives and helping to build the future.

LAST WEEK

We had an informative and useful presentation from BRYCE TAYLOR, Special Agent, U.S. Secret Service. He spoke with clarity and in detail about scams and crimes he sees everyday in his work with the Financial Crimes Task Force. It was both interesting and reassuring to learn hear how to recognize threats from financial crimes, and practical steps to take in order to better protect ourselves.

NEXT WEEK

We will host LEE HARTLEY from Active Education. Established in 2019, Active Education operates out of Redlands, providing activity programs to schools, particularly those in low economic areas. Their focus is on promoting physical activity among students through enjoyable and interactive games.

POLIO FACT

Thanks to the efforts of Rotary and its partners, more than 16 million people who otherwise might have been paralyzed are walking today. In all, more than 2,500,000,000 children have been vaccinated since 1988.

ROTARY FOUNDATION – A REMINDER

The Rotary Foundation helps Rotary members to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace by improving health, providing quality education, improving the environment, and alleviating poverty. YOU may have wondered, what impact can one donation have?

  • For as little as 60 cents, a child can be protected from polio.
  • $50 can provide clean water to help fight waterborne illness.
  • $500 can launch an anti-bullying campaign and create a safe environment for children.

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Good afternoon ROTARIANS! I hope we’re all faring well after endless days of rain. The National Weather Service reported 5 inches of rain around Redlands, and if your yards look like mine, I’m not surprised. Looking ahead, unrelated to weather, is the annual Winemaker Dinner chaired this year by ERIC GRENIER with some help from others, of course. Notably LYNN WHITMER and DAVID GAUTHIER. With such dutiful folks at the helm, I have no doubt it’ll be another great event. I hear they’re even taking extra time out of their busy days to do “research” – I thought that was just called “drinking wine.”
