Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers of all ages and interests are needed to help provide support to event participants.   Enjoy supporting this family-friendly community event and even take home a free T-shirt. Specific volunteer opportunities include:

Set-Up                                                                                                             4am – 8am
For all the early birds!!  The Rotary Ride will have many tables, chairs, directional signage, and more to set up!  All the set-up will be done the morning of the event to reduce the chance of tampering by pranksters.  Most of the set-up crew will need to be able to lift moderately heavy objects.

Parking & Traffic Control                                                                      5:30am - 8am
Want to help get the Rotary Ride off to a great start?  Help us direct traffic as they cyclists arrive for check-in and registration.

Check-In & Registration                                                                 5:30am – 8:30am
We know everyone is eager to get checked-in for the Rotary Ride.  We need you and many other volunteers to help make registration as efficient as possible.  These volunteers will set up the check-in area, work with staff to check-in participants, and help break down the check-in area after all participants have been registered.  For most volunteers, only minimal lifting will be required.  Registration is a fun way to greet old friends and make new ones.

Safety Monitors & Course Marshals                                                  7:30am – 4pm
There are several areas on the courses where we ask the riders to exercise extreme caution, due to danger on a descent or vehicle traffic that they will encounter.  The Safety Monitors & Course Marshals will politely, but firmly, remind them to obey ALL traffic laws and use extreme caution in these especially dangerous areas.  It is very helpful if the volunteers in these areas have their own cell phones in case emergency help is needed.  There may also be areas on the course where riders will benefit from directional assistance.  We will need volunteers in these areas to help keep the riders on the right track.

Rest Stop Assistance – Along the Route                                         7:30am – 4pm
There will be five rest stops along the route.  These rest stops will provide cyclists with water, sports drink, snacks and motivation.  Each rest stop is staffed with several people.  Tasks include setting up tables, counting riders as they come in, filling water bottles, carrying bags of ice, mixing sports drink, handing out snacks, and cheering on riders.  Some rest stop crew and volunteers need to be able to lift at least 30 pounds.

Passport Ambassadors –  Atop seven designated climbs          7:30am – 4pm
(2-4 hour shifts depending on assigned location)
There are seven designated climbs along the 60 mile ‘The Rick Beswick Savage Challenge’ course.  At the top of each climb the riders will have their bib number stamped to indicate their successful ascent of the climb.  In order to receive an ‘I survived the Rick Beswick Savage Challenge’ commemorative tee-shirt, the riders will have to present their ‘passport’ (bib number) with the seven designated unique stamps showing their accomplishment.  We will need at least two volunteers atop each designated climb
One to distribute the stamps and one to document the bib numbers as they come through.  This is a great opportunity to cheer on the riders at the most difficult points on the course!

Finish Line                                                                                                      9am – 4pm
The riders will be delighted (and relieved) to see you!  Help at the finish line by directing riders, distributing tee-shirts, goodie bags and more.  Encourage participants to stick around and take in the excitement offered by the Redlands Bicycle Classic events that will be taking place downtown.

Broom Truck & Sweep                                                                                9am – 4pm
‘Riders in need’ will be happy to see the helpful volunteers driving the broom truck!  For riders that encounter mechanical difficulties or for some other reason are unable to continue on the course, the volunteers with the broom truck will ‘come to their rescue’ by loading up the bikes and participants and transporting them back to the finish line area.  This is not a ‘taxi service’ for those who give-up, this is help for the participant in trouble.

Tear-Down                                                                                                    11am – 4pm
Help us leave our city better than we found it by ensuring we clean up after our event!  The tear-down crew will be responsible for collecting tables, chairs, signage and more from various locations along the routes.  Most of the tear-down crew will need to be able to lift moderately heavy objects.
